How To Choose a Getting Ready Location for your Wedding Day

Where you get ready the morning of your wedding day has the potential to set the tone for the rest of your day. Will you feel calm, relaxed and zen as all your vendors come to you and you have plenty of clean, open space to host all your bridesmaids and vendors comfortably? Or will you spend the morning sorting through transportation logistics, moving from place to place and looking for misplaced items in a tightly squeezed room? Not only that, but the ‘getting ready’ photos themselves set the tone for the rest of your photo gallery as well. These are the first photos you will see in your gallery and wedding album, and they have the potential to be some of my favorite. All that being said, the getting ready location is certainly something not to overlook!

How To Choose a Getting Ready Location

1. Make sure the space has good, natural light (a.k.a. has plenty of windows). This is not only important for photos, but the for the hair and makeup artists, too. At the end of the day, we are professionals and can make any space work but it certainly helps to have excess natural light!

2. You’ll want to have enough space to comfortably fit everyone you’re getting ready with (bridesmaids, mom, mother-in-law, hair & makeup artists, photographers, etc.) – expect there to be even more people coming in and out than you might think on the morning of!

3. If the getting ready location is not on site with your ceremony, make sure it is nearby your ceremony location. You want to avoid long drives on your wedding day wherever possible!

4. The photographer wants to focus on your gown, hair & makeup, the wedding party, and all of the little moments in between – not the Starbucks cups, curling irons, and mountains of bobby bins. When possible, choose a clean and uncluttered space. Too much stuff in the background takes away from the subject in a photo.

5. Your getting ready lotion should ideally fit the aesthetic for the rest of the day. If you’re having a summer beach wedding, it doesn’t make sense to get ready in a dark log cabin. If you’re getting married in a rustic barn, you may not want to get ready in a modern home.
